DECLARE: Jeane Cohen

What does it mean to be contemporary? We asked all eleven of the artists in the show to give us their thoughts, collected in our DECLARE blog series.

Jeane Cohen's work examines the metaphysical through the tangible and immediately present. She is looking backwards to 1543 when the England Parliament started restricting timber, and started looking to the Americas to supply these resources. She is looking forward in anticipation of a time when artwork will be a time capsule for natural environments and ecologies that no longer exist on earth. Jeane's paintings and drawings are intimate evidences of a contemporary climate. When asked what contemporary meant to her, she responded:

"Contemporary means what is being made in the current moment. Weather it be a famous artist who has their thumb on the pulse of the art world, or a person being creative in their back yard who doesn't have a thought for the art world, it is all contemporary response to life as it is right now."
